Deepinder Goyal remarked that launching a separate food delivery app for budget-conscious customers adds to organisational complexity.

He added that the company will "wait and watch" before introducing a separate app, similar to rival Swiggy's Toing and Rapido's Ownly.

"We will wait and watch, and are okay being the last mover if, over time, it becomes clear that introducing a new app is the right long-term approach for targeting budget-conscious customers," Goyal said on Thursday in Zomato's quarterly shareholders letter.

Goyal’s comment comes after Swiggy recently launched Toing, targeting college students and young professionals. Also, Rapido’s Ownly offers budget-friendly food.

Goyal believes that Zomato’s main app should be able to address this use case without a new app. “...which is why we lowered the minimum order value for free delivery from Rs 199 to Rs 99 for Gold members,” he added.

Swiggy’s separate app is targeted for those looking for affordable options, even though its main app has a section called ‘99 store,’ featuring budget-friendly options.

“We believe that launching another food delivery (aggregation) app to differentiate between target audiences has to be a carefully thought-out decision, since it significantly increases organisational complexity,” Goyal said.

Stiff competition ahead for Zomato

On Thursday, Zomato parent Eternal reported a 63% year-on-year decline in its consolidated net profit for Q2 FY26, at Rs 65 crore, compared with Rs 176 crore in the same period last year.

Its revenue from operations during the quarter stood at Rs 13,590 crore, up 183% from Rs 4,799 crore in the previous year.

Swiggy launched Toing last month in Pune, featuring burgers, sandwiches, fries, rolls, shakes, coffee, mini meals, cakes, etc., priced within Rs 150.
