Ride-hailing startup Rapido has entered the food delivery market with its standalone Ownly app in Bengaluru, offering a zero-commission model for restaurants to compete with Swiggy and Zomato. Currently operational in select Bengaluru localities, including Koramangala, HSR Layout, and BTM Layout, the newly introduced app aims to disrupt the market dominated by Swiggy and Zomato.

The launch happened after months of discussions between Rapido and the National Restaurants Association of India (NRAI), which represents over 50,000 eateries.

The restaurant association has been looking for alternatives to traditional food delivery giants, as the high commission charges are a major concern.

Rapido Ownly has a unique selling point with its zero-commission model, so that restaurant partners can retain more revenue. Under the agreed terms, restaurants will cover the delivery cost for orders within a 4 km radius, while customers may pay a nominal fee depending on order value. For example:

Orders ≤ Rs 100: Rs 10 delivery cost to restaurant, Rs 20 to customer.

Orders between Rs 101–Rs 400: Rs 25 delivery fee + GST.

Orders above Rs 400: Rs 50 delivery fee.

Cofounder speaks

Rapido’s co-founder, Aravind Sanka, shared that the company’s goal is to “give value back to users” and enter new categories only when they can address market gaps.

With 30 million monthly active users and 4 million monthly rides in more than 500 cities, the ride-hailing platform wants to use its current network of bike taxi riders to fulfil food orders.

It has plans to extend the Ownly service to 500 cities by the end of the year.
