Zomato has launched an Electric Vehicle (EV) rental bike fleet in Delhi, providing the rental of two-wheeler EVs to its delivery partners.

EV bikes for delivery partners

This pilot phase has started with 300 electric vehicle (EV) bikes for delivery partners to experience the benefits of using EVs for deliveries compared to internal combustion engine (ICE) bikes.

This is Zomato’s move towards a climate-conscious delivery goal. Deepinder Goyal’s company aims to facilitate 100% EV-based food deliveries by 2030, to attain a goal of Net Zero emissions across its food ordering and delivery value chain by 2033.

As of March 2025, Zomato has over 37,000 EV-based food delivery partners who have contributed to avoiding approximately 4,900 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (TCo2e) emissions, which equates to the environmental impact of planting an estimated 220,000 trees in FY25.

Zomato's sustainability goals

The new initiative aligns with Zomato’s 2030 sustainability goals, which span eight themes: waste-free world, climate-conscious deliveries, zero hunger, inclusive growth, diversity, equity and inclusion, health, safety and wellbeing for all, customer centricity and governance.

Zomato and Swiggy together account for a significant chunk of the Indian gig workforce. Rival Swiggy had also previously announced plans for a 100% EV delivery fleet by 2030.

Speaking on the initiative, Anjalli Ravi Kumar, Chief Sustainability Officer, Eternal, said, “Making sustainable mobility accessible to our delivery partners is critical to our mission of ‘better food for more people’. For this to be achieved, it is imperative to build an ecosystem where all delivery partners have easy access to EV bikes suited to the demands of food delivery. Through the launch of these specially designed, efficient electric bikes on rent, we’re ensuring delivery partners can thrive while contributing to building a greener tomorrow.”

Zomato’s initiative also aligns with the Government’s plans to make Delhi the EV Capital of India.

Incidentally, the food delivery startup was under fire as a Noida-based small restaurant owner slammed Zomato after the food delivery app offered zero payouts, charged arbitrary amounts and placed ads without consent.
