In a recently viral video, an Airtel employee in Mumbai is seen refusing to interact with a customer in Marathi.

The video now widely shared on social media was posted by the customer, Akhil Chitre.

Airtel employee's viral video sparks outrage

When Chitre requests her to speak in Marathi about the issue he is facing as a customer, the woman employee responds, “Why should I speak in Marathi? Where is it written to speak Marathi in Maharashtra? You should speak to me properly."

This incident is doing the rounds on social media and netizens are expressing their anger and disappointment.

Some social media users shared that the Airtel employee's refusal to speak in Marathi is disrespectful to the local culture and language, especially after the Maharashtra government recently passed a resolution mandating the use of Marathi in government offices.

Under this resolution, non-compliance with the new rule can be subject to penalties.

While the employee’s comments have received backlash, some argued that language preference should be a personal choice.

The customer claimed that the employee refused to address his grievances and even screamed at him.

“Have you bought, or do you own Maharashtra? Are you going to tell me where to work and not to work? Recording is not allowed, or I will call the police," the Airtel employee told the customer.
