Tata Steel CIO Jayanta Banerjee
Tata Steel Chief Information Officer (CIO) Jayanta Banerjee recently said that its digital platforms have helped sell products online.
In an interview with EnterpriseStory, he admitted that his company can't deliver steel in 10 minutes but can now definitely deliver in 72 hours.
Tata Steel aims to be like Zomato!
“We are now trying to become the Zepto, Zomato or Blinkit of the world, he remarked. “Being a steel company, I will not be able to deliver steel to you in 10 minutes, but I can deliver steel to you in 72 hours.”
The steel giant’s crude steel capacity is 35 million tonnes per annum, with plants located across India, the UK, the Netherlands, and Thailand, with 169 companies under its network.
However, the company’s digital journey started over eight years ago, now with 600 AI tools, and has collected data approaching 11.2 petabytes.
“Today we are in a position to confirm that the product will be available within 72 hours instead of seven days,” Banerjee affirmed in the interview.
Now, steel delivery takes about three to seven days, depending on the kind of product.
As claimed by the CIO, AI monitors all operations, from buying raw materials to logistics and delivery.
Tata Steel - an early adopter in steel and tech
“Tata Steel has been a company that is a leader in steel, but also has been an early adopter of technology, whether it's a steel technology or digital,” Banerjee said.
“Our investment became an ROI-based construct, where for every dollar we spent we had to get some money back to the company,” the CIO said.
He shared that Tata Steel built around 600 AI models, which are being deployed across various functions of the company.
Around 80% of them are used in its manufacturing division, from helping production to safety.
For instance, Tata Steel uses an AI imaging model to find out if there are any defects in any manufacturing process.
