According to Business Standard, Tata Steel has claimed to be the country's first company to develop hydrogen pipes capable of transporting hydrogen.

In a press release, Tata Steel stated that these new pipes meet all critical requirements for hydrogen transportation.

Using steel produced at the company's Kalinganagar facility, it built and processed hydrogen-compliant API X65 pipes at the Khopoli plant.

END-TO-END IN-HOUSE PROCESS

Tata Steel handled the entire process of developing the hydrogen pipes. From designing and manufacturing the hot-rolled steel to producing the pipes, it did everything in-house.

The new innovation will be able to transport 100 percent pure gaseous hydrogen under high pressure (100 bar).

Last year, the company became India's first steel company to manufacture hot-rolled steel for gaseous hydrogen transportation.

Explaining how the pipes underwent hydrogen qualification tests, the company stated, “The hydrogen qualification tests were conducted at RINA-CSM S.p.A in Italy, a recognised agency for hydrogen-related testing and certification.”

In line with how Tata Steel has contributed to India's National Hydrogen Mission, Prabhat Kumar, Vice-President - Marketing & Sales (Flat Products) at Tata Steel, said, “Tata Steel has always been at the forefront of developing advanced steel grades. The successful testing of these ERW pipes highlights our ability to support the energy sector. We are proud to contribute to India’s National Hydrogen Mission, which is a key part of the country’s clean energy transition.”

According to him, Tata Steel is now ready to fulfil domestic as well as global demand for specialized steel pipes that are used in hydrogen transportation.

INDIA'S NATIONAL HYDROGEN MISSION

The country's National Hydrogen Mission aims to produce at least 5 million metric tonnes of Green Hydrogen annually by 2030. The potential to reach 10 million metric tonnes (MMT) on an annual basis should also be realized so as to meet export demands.

As far as industry statistics are concerned, the demand for hydrogen-compliant steel is projected to rise from 2026-27. Over the next five to seven years, a total of 3,50,000 tonnes of steel is expected to be required.

According to Business Standard, steel pipelines are one of the most cost-effective solutions for large-scale distribution of hydrogen.
