The tech giant developed the new cancer-therapy hypothesis in a research collaboration with the Ivy League Yale University.

“An exciting milestone for AI in science: Our C2S-Scale 27B foundation model, built with Yale and based on Gemma, generated a novel hypothesis about cancer cellular behavior, which scientists experimentally validated in living cells,” Sundar Pichai tweeted.

“With more preclinical and clinical tests, this discovery may reveal a promising new pathway for developing therapies to fight cancer,” the Google CEO added.

All about Google's new research

Google's latest work in AI is expected to treat cancers with the launch of C2S-Scale 27B, a foundation AI model developed with Yale University, to understand the “language” of individual cells.

The model predicted new drugs that could work best to fight tumours by studying how cancer behaves at a microscopic level.

It was then lab-tested on human model cells, as announced by Google.

“This launch builds upon our work from earlier this year, where we demonstrated that biological models follow clear scaling laws — just like with natural language, larger models perform better on biology,” Shekoofeh Azizi, Staff Research Scientist at Google DeepMind and Bryan Perozzi, Senior Staff Research Scientist at Graph Mining, Google Research, shared in a blog

“This work raised a critical question: Does a larger model just get better at existing tasks, or can it acquire entirely new capabilities? The true promise of scaling lies in the creation of new ideas, and the discovery of the unknown,” they added.

“The model + resources are now on HuggingFace and GitHub so researchers can keep building and experimenting,” said Sundar Pichai.
