Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella shared a video on social media showing how small farmers in India have been using the tech giant’s AI tools to predict weather, fight pests, and get better yields.
Satya Nadella tweets video showing AI's impact on farming
He captioned the video on X, “A fantastic example of AI's impact on agriculture.”
"The one example I wanted to highlight was one of the small farmers who was part of the Baramati co-op... where you can take this powerful technology but make it have impact, where a small landowner is able to improve the yield of their land," the Microsoft boss said, indicating Maharashtra’s Agricultural Development Trust (ADT) that has been using Microsoft AI technology with a select group of farmers in the drought-prone region.
He further explained that the AI tools use geospatial data, and spatial-temporal data from drones, satellites, and soil to help farmers understand the best practices for their lands in their vernacular languages.
"That's the stitching together. It's pretty phenomenal," Satya Nadella remarked.
One of the farmers in Baramati who has benefitted from using Microsoft's AI tools is 65-year-old sugarcane farmer Suresh Jagtap.
He relies heavily on AI to optimise growing conditions while harvesting the crops when the sucrose content in the cane is at its peak.
The crop won't be harvested till November but Jagtap said he can already notice the difference.
“The growth is good,” the sugarcane farmer told Microsoft. “The leaves are greener and the height is more uniform.”
Elon Musk reacts
Elon Musk commended Microsoft's impact and shared that more 'breakthroughs' are about to happen soon.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk commented on Nadella’s post, “More and more breakthroughs with quantum computing ...".
