In a recent post, Zoho CEO Sridhar Vembu echoed the sentiments of Elon Musk, claiming college degrees are not necessary for success. Tesla CEO Elon Musk claimed college is overrated and that a four-year degree is not needed to become successful in life.

Vembu, who has a prestigious academic background himself, believes that the focus should be on valuing practical skills and hands-on work, rather than traditional degrees in the humanities.

We Don't Need History & Economics Degrees

In his post, quoting the video of Elon Musk's speech, Vembu said, "India has to value people who do hands-on work, including electricians, plumbers, welders and nurses. We need people who build things."

His statement reflected the belief that practical skills are crucial for the workforce, more so than traditional degrees.

Rejecting Degrees in Humanities

Sharing Musk's sentiments, Vembu outright rejected and admonished the idea of degrees in the field of humanities.

He stated, "We do not need more Economics or Political Science or History majors. I study history, philosophy, and economics, but I would never want to get a degree in any of them."

Vembu believes that opening more degree colleges does not build skills or offer livelihoods, echoing the sentiment that practical skills are more valuable in today's world.

Valuing Practical Skills

Vembu, like Musk, emphasizes the importance of valuing people who work with their hands and build things. He believes that skills such as plumbing, welding, and nursing are essential for society and should be given the same level of respect and importance as traditional degrees.
