Infosys founder Narayan Murthy has expressed his reservations about the growing AI hype in India, stating that many so-called AI solutions are just silly, old programs. Speaking at TiE Con Mumbai 2025, Narayana Murthy dismissed the exaggerated claims surrounding AI development in India.
Narayan Murthy’s Concerns About the State of AI in India
While speaking at the TiE Con Mumbai 2025, Narayan Murthy said, “I think somehow it has become a fashion in India to talk about AI for everything.” He also added that several ordinary programs today are touted as AI.
“There are two fundamental principles in AI. One is machine learning, which is a large-scale correlation. Therefore, it helps you based on a large amount of data to predict. This is simple machine learning,” said Narayan Murthy.
He also added that “the second is what is called deep learning. Deep learning imitates how the human brain works.”
According to Murthy, deep learning will be capable of handling and solving "unsupervised algorithms." Because supervised algorithms require a lot of data, machine learning typically handles them, but deep learning uses the data to develop new program branches or conditions. After that, it will be capable of making decisions.
“So unsupervised data, which uses deep learning and neural networks, has much greater potential to do things that mimic human behaviour better. But what I am seeing being called AI is silly, old programs,” Mr. Murthy said, slamming the AI hype in India.
In the meantime, Infosys is developing its own artificial intelligence models, while focusing on Small Language Models (SLMs) that are constructed using both proprietary datasets and open-source components. In order to provide useful tools, the business has been promoting Generative AI (Gen AI) for specific industry applications and use cases, going beyond superficial AI labels.
