Ashwini Vaishnaw, the Minister for Electronics and Information Technology and Information and Broadcasting, has urged social media giants to take responsibility for content posted on their platforms or face stronger regulations.
Minister urges social media platforms to be responsible
"Social media platforms must start taking responsibility of what they are publishing so that the society at large doesn't get harmed by what they publish," Vaishnaw said, pointing at the increasing concerns around deepfakes, synthetic content and misinformation that are diminishing trust between institutions and citizens globally.
Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum in Singapore, the Minister also discussed the fast-paced rise of the semiconductor industries, the increase in startup culture, the technologically advanced talent pool in India, and the major changes occurring in the IT industry.
Vaishnaw mentioned that India is adopting a 'techno-legal approach' to address challenges posed through social media and stressed the need of legal frameworks.
"Otherwise, there will be stronger regulations. There has to be. Otherwise, society will be disturbed," he cautioned.
In the AI space, Minister Vaishnaw announced that India has created a common compute facility with 38,000 GPUs available to researchers and students at less than $1, compared to $2.5-$3 in developed economies.
"Our Prime Minister says that we must democratise technology," he said.
He also addressed concerns about India's IT workforce in an AI-dominated future.
“India will become one of the biggest supplier of AI services. That's what the IT industry people are saying," he added.
Social media platforms should take responsibility of what they publish, to strengthen trust levels in society.
