Elon Musk's SpaceX and Jio Platforms (JPL) have partnered to provide Starlink satellite broadband services in India. However, the agreement is subject to government clearance before SpaceX can start operations in the nation. As per the deal, Jio will offer Starlink equipment for sale in its retail outlets and online, along with installation assistance.

Jio Platforms Signs a Deal to Bring Starlink to India

Jio Platforms, India’s leading telecom provider, has signed a deal with SpaceX to integrate Starlink’s satellite-based internet solutions with its existing infrastructure. If the government green-lights the project, this partnership could revolutionize internet access across India by offering high-speed satellite broadband in areas where traditional networks struggle to reach.

This partnership follows a prior dispute between the two businesses over the spectrum allocation for satellite services. As per international norms, the Indian government supported Musk's desire for administrative allocation even while Jio advocated for an auction.

The announcement from Jio was made just one day after Bharti Airtel and SpaceX signed a similar agreement. Airtel is putting itself in a position to make use of Starlink's capabilities. Airtel has a long history in satellite communications through its OneWeb initiative.

In addition to regular broadband, the two telecom giants are now expected to fight in the satellite internet market. Both agreements are contingent on Starlink receiving official clearance to start operations in the nation.

“We applaud Jio’s commitment to advancing India’s connectivity. We are looking forward to working with Jio and receiving authorisation from the Government of India to provide more people, organisations and businesses with access to Starlink’s high-speed internet services,” said Gwynne Shotwell, President and Chief Operating Officer of SpaceX.

Why Starlink is Important to India

The partnership could be a game-changer for India's connectivity ecosystem, particularly for remote villages, hilly terrains, and underserved regions. Unlike fiber-based broadband services, satellite internet can provide reliable connectivity even in the most challenging locations.

While major cities enjoy high-speed internet from telecom giants like Jio and Airtel, rural and isolated areas continue to have poor or nonexistent connectivity. Despite government efforts, just about 47% of Indians have reliable internet connectivity, leaving over 700 million people without it.

“Ensuring that every Indian, no matter where they live, has access to affordable and high-speed broadband remains Jio’s top priority. Our collaboration with SpaceX to bring Starlink to India strengthens our commitment and marks a transformative step toward seamless broadband connectivity for all," said Mathew Oommen, Group CEO, Reliance Jio.

Jio’s strong presence in India, combined with SpaceX’s advanced satellite technology, could accelerate the adoption of high-speed internet nationwide. This move would not only benefit individual users but also support businesses, education, healthcare, and government services by bridging the digital divide.
