Jio Platforms, the digital arm of Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries, has announced the launch of a new cloud-based virtual desktop service, JioPC, allowing users to convert their television screens into cloud-powered personal computers.

Pricing and other details

With JioPC, ordinary televisions are turned into fully functioning personal computers through the existing Jio set-top box. Currently, the service is being rolled out on a free trial basis and is accessible only by invitation to select customers.

The service can be bundled with the company’s broadband plans or be purchased separately for Rs 5,499 (about $64).

Company speaks

According to the company, JioPC aims to provide affordable computing to Indian households with a low PC penetration. The service promises to offer functionalities like web browsing, word processing, e-learning sessions and the ability to run apps.

Users can access a cloud-based PC interface by plugging in a keyboard and mouse.

However, the device does not support peripherals such as webcams or printers.

According to the company's website, the cloud system includes open-source software like LibreOffice for productivity tasks.

Though Microsoft Office is not pre-installed, the applications can be used through a web browser.

How to use JioPC?

First, you have to power on your TV and the Jio Set Top Box.

Next, navigate to the apps section and open the JioPC app.

After that, plug in a USB or Bluetooth-enabled keyboard and mouse combo to the Set Top Box. JioPC’s website lists a couple of suitable keyboard and mouse combo compatible with the service.

Following that, set up your JioPC account. Your personal details will be needed before you can proceed. Click on “Continue” once done.

About Jio’s AX6000 WiFi 6 Universal Router

JioPC follows the recent launch of Jio’s AX6000 WiFi 6 Universal Router, which provides high-speed, stable internet access to large homes and smart households across India.

Launched in June, the dual-band router is capable of delivering speeds up to 6000Mbps, with advanced technologies such as OFDMA and MU-MIMO to give consistent connectivity even during peak usage times.

The router also features Jio’s proprietary True AI Mesh system, which dynamically manages device connections to put an end to dead zones, improving coverage.

The AX6000 supports both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands, covering up to 2,000 square feet and includes WPA3 encryption for improved online security.
