Reliance Industries is planning to build the world’s largest data centre in India as reported by Bloomberg News. Mukesh Ambani’s dream project will be located in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

Reliance Industries is supposedly purchasing AI semiconductors from American AI tech giant NVIDIA

Incidentally, Reliance and Nvidia announced a joint attempt to build AI infrastructure in India during a chat session in October 2024 at the Nvidia AI Summit.

The US-based MNC’s CEO Jensen Huang disclosed that his company would supply its Blackwell AI processors for a one-gigawatt data centre Reliance is developing.

"It makes complete sense that India should manufacture its own AI. You should not export data to import intelligence. India should not export flour to import bread," said Huang while in conversation with the Reliance Chairman Mukesh Ambani during the summit.

"We can use intelligence to actually bring prosperity to all the people and bring equality to the world...Apart from the US and China, India has the best digital connectivity infrastructure," Ambani said while speaking on the large intelligence capacity of the Indian market.

In September last year, Reliance Industries and NVIDIA announced a partnership to build AI supercomputers in India and create large language models (LLMs) trained in diverse Indian languages. Later in the year, it was reported that NVIDIA was entering into a similar collaboration with the Tata Group.

India’s chipmaking industry is at an initial stage. Establishing the semiconductor fabrication facilities (fabs) is a highly capital-intensive process that takes years to materialise. The government assured an investment of over Rs 10,000 crore to fund startups, AI projects, and the development of LLMs.

Running the semiconductor fabs requires a specialised workforce, something the country is still in the process of developing. At the moment, India has yet to produce its first chip domestically.

“India will be one of the biggest intelligence markets. It is not only our aspirations, but I think it is just the raw gene pool and the row gene power that exists in India, the youth power that exists in India that drives intelligence.” Mukesh Ambani said at the Nvidia AI Summit.

He also shared his belief that AI services will go beyond the Indian markets.

“And Indians now will not only export CEOs to the world's largest companies but hundreds of millions of Indians. And hundreds of millions will deliver AI services to help a better world,” Ambani added.
