American Artificial Research (AI) research organization, OpenAI, has recently made a groundbreaking move by integrating a new set of search functions into its renowned large language model, ChatGPT. OpenAI announced on Thursday the introduction of search engine capabilities to its ChatGPT generative AI chatbot. With this, it is bringing a challenge to Google's longtime dominance in the web search arena.

What is ChatGPT's new upgrade all about?

The latest upgrade to ChatGPT empowers users to receive "fast, timely answers" accompanied by links to relevant web sources right within the chat interface. This means that users can now access information swiftly and conveniently without the need to resort to a traditional search engine, marking a significant leap forward in AI technology.

How does this upgrade benefit users?

By enhancing ChatGPT's capabilities with real-time information retrieval from across the web, OpenAI has vastly improved the user experience. Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI tweeted "hyping" their new product urging netizens, "you really should get chatgpt plus and install the chrome extension for search."

"ChatGPT search leverages third-party search providers, as well as content provided directly by our partners, to provide the information users are looking for," OpenAI announced in a blog post.

The new search model is a fine-tuned version of GPT-4o, the startup mentioned, elaborating that all ChatGPT Plus and Team users will be able to have access to it on Thursday.

How does OpenAI's move challenge the status quo?

By venturing into the realm of web search, a domain typically dominated by Google, OpenAI has positioned itself as a formidable competitor to the tech giant. In addition to rivaling Google, OpenAI's initiative also puts it in direct competition with Microsoft's Bing and other emerging services like Perplexity — a search-focused AI chatbot firm backed by industry heavyweights like Jeff Bezos and Nvidia.
