According to recent reports, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg plans to launch the Meta AI standalone app in the second quarter of the year.

Zuckerberg aims to make his company the leader in artificial intelligence, ahead of competitors such as OpenAI and Google parent Alphabet.

Sam Altman reacts

It seems that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman did not expect this competition. Just hours after the report went live, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman commented on the "upcoming" app from Facebook parent Meta.

"ok fine maybe we'll do a social app," wrote Sam Altman, quoting the CNBC report.

He followed it up with another post: "lol if facebook tries to come at us and we just uno reverse them it would be so funny” followed by a laughing emoji.

Facebook’s MetaAI was introduced in September 2023 to function as a digital assistant that can generate responses and images based on user prompts on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger.

What is Meta AI?

In April 2024, Zuckerberg’s company integrated Meta AI more deeply by replacing the search feature across these apps with the chatbot, making it a central tool for user interaction.

Interestingly, the new upcoming standalone app is expected to provide users with more personalised experiences with Meta AI, potentially increasing engagement beyond the existing platforms.

Moreover, Facebook’s Meta plans to test a paid subscription service for the Meta AI app, similar to offerings from OpenAI and Microsoft, providing users with access to advanced features of the chatbot.
