When Julia first moved to India, many of her friends worried about her safety and as a woman, she carried the same concern herself. But her experience in Ahmedabad quickly changed her perspective.

“I lived in Ahmedabad, Gujarat for a year, and honestly, I never felt safer,” she shared.

Julia credits part of this sense of security to Gujarat being a dry state.

“As a woman, safety is always on my mind. So when I first moved to India, many of my friends worried about me. But living in a dry state changed my perspective. It made me see how certain choices at a city level can actually influence how safe a place feels.” she explained.

She was also fortunate to stay in a gated community that brought together both Indians and foreigners. “It felt secure, but also warm and welcoming,” Julia said. While she acknowledges that safety varies across India, her year in Ahmedabad left her feeling reassured and at ease.
