EV giant Tesla is set to make its entry into the Indian market next month in July.
Its first showroom will reportedly open up in Mumbai.
Alongside this, according to Inc42, Tesla will also be opening another showroom in New Delhi.
Ahead of this market debut, the EV automaker has imported supercharger components, car accessories, spare parts, and merchandise from the United States of America, China, and the Netherlands.
Bloomberg reported that the first shipment of Tesla’s cars has already made it to India from the EV giant’s factory in China's Shanghai.
These are the Model Y rear-wheel drive sport utility vehicles (SUVs).
This set of cars was declared at Rupees 27.2 lakh and incurred more than Rs 21 lakh in import duties. It must be noted that India charges 70% customs duty on imported cars that are fully-built and are under $40,000 plus other applicable surcharges.
Reports suggest that the world's largest selling electric car, Model Y, will be sold for a price of more than Rs 48.5 lakh, excluding taxes and insurance. However, this figure isn't the final price for now and will depend on Tesla’s margin and positioning strategy.
Alongside this development, Tesla has expanded its hiring initiatives in India across the verticals of charging, retail, and policy teams.
Additionally, it is planning to offer more models to the country as well as lease warehouse space in Karnataka. The EV automaker is also working in the direction of expanding its existing warehouse in Gurugram.
According to The Economic Times, Tesla’s executives have been making regular visits to the Mumbai and New Delhi showrooms which will be affluent locations to attract a similar crowd.
Tesla’s plans to enter the Indian market have long been hindered by disagreements with the country's authorities over high tariffs and local manufacturing requirements. Now, with sales dipping in Europe and China, the company is finally setting foot in India.
However, it must be noted that Tesla is currently only looking to expand its presence in India via showrooms. The EV giant has not displayed interest in starting manufacturing in the country. Earlier this month, Union Minister of Heavy Industries HD Kumaraswamy confirmed the same.
