After US President Donald Trump announced the shocking tariff rates, India confirmed it is actively negotiating a trade agreement with the United States.
Piyush Goyal remarks on Trump's tariff pause
Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said India would not be pressured into taking hasty decisions and reaffirmed that national interest remains central to any deal.
"Humne pahle bhi kai baar kaha hai ki hum banduk rakhke kabhi negotiate nai karte hain. Sammay ki pabandiyaan acchhi rahti hain ki wo protsaahit karti hain ki baat teji se ho, lekin jab tak desh hit aur jan hit ko hum surakshit na rakh saken, tab tak kabhi bhi jaldbazzi karna accha nai hai (I have said it many times earlier, we do not negotiate at the gunpoint. Time restrictions are good as they encourage us to negotiate swiftly, but until we are able to protect the interests of the country and people, it is never good to be hasty)," Goyal told reporters. Incidentally, US President Donald Trump has temporarily paused reciprocal tariffs for all nations except China, which now faces a 145% duty.
Initially, India was among the countries that were to be affected by Trump’s aggressive tariff policy, however, it has been granted a 90-day reprieve.
This window has provided a space for both countries to continue trade negotiations without immediate economic pressure.
With the new tariff strategy, the US government is attempting to isolate China economically, while keeping lines of communication open with other trade partners, including India.
“Our dialogue with the United States is progressing steadily and constructively, with mutual respect. We are committed to securing terms that foster growth, innovation, and fairness for both sides,” Minister Goyal said.
