At the Spain-India Business Summit held in Mumbai, Union Minister for Road, Transport, and Highways, Nitin Gadkari said India will be the world's top automobile hub within the next decade. Referring to India’s competitive advantage over China in production costs and labor, the Minister affirmed the country’s potential to become a global leader in the motor sector.
Gadkari confident about India becoming top leader in global Auto scene
"The size of our automobile industry is 22 lakh crores. The size of China's automobile industry is 44 lakh crores and the US is 78 lakh crores. Now, our aim is to make India’s automobile industry within 10 years number one in the world." said Gadkari.
Although production cost in India is lower than in most other countries, high logistic costs could be an issue.
"USA and European countries, it is 12%. And in the Indian scenario, it goes up to 14 to 16%. So, this is the first time we have decided to reduce this cost. We now have a lot of express highways, 36 green access control express highways. Our NHI is triple-A rating,” the Minister added.
As India focuses on infrastructure, the logistic costs will decrease with better roads and ports.
Incidentally, speaking at an international seminar recently, Nitin Gadkari said officials and contractors will be held responsible for the poor quality of road works. The seminar, ‘Advances in Bridge Management’ was held in Bengaluru by the Indian Road Congress (IRC). In his speech at the event, the Union Minister criticized IRC remarking that the quality of Indian roads had to improve substantially. Gadkari added that he was “annoyed” by the time the authorities took in every decision-making stage.
