Goa, a widely popular destination among domestic and international tourists is now facing a decline in its tourist numbers. Netizens are blaming high costs and monopolistic practices in the tourism industry as the main reasons for declining footfalls here. Moreover, Goa’s aggressive taxi mafia is also driving away visitors.

An X user, Ramanuj Mukherjee recently tweeted, “Foreign tourists have abandoned the state already. Look at 2019 v 2023 numbers. Russians and Brits who used to visit annually have opted for Sri Lanka instead.”

His post has gone viral with 2.6 million views. Netizens have supported him and shared their bitter experiences with the taxi mafia in Goa.

From Mukherjee’s post and the various comments that followed, it is evident that there is a lack of regulation and accountability for taxis in Goa.

To overcharge customers, especially foreigners, cab drivers even resort to violent tactics creating a hostile environment for visitors. Netizens believe this is leading to a decline in tourist numbers in the gorgeous southwestern state of India.

X User brings an important issue to light

Ramanuj Mukherjee's post further accentuates the gravity of the situation. The dwindling numbers of foreign tourists, especially Russians and Brits, choosing other destinations over Goa is a cause for concern. The data revealing a sharp drop in tourist arrivals over the years paints a grim picture for Goa's tourism industry. The reputation of the state as a welcoming and hospitable destination is recently being overshadowed by tales of exploitation and aggression.

Mr. Mukherjee concluded, “Indian tourists still visiting, but soon likely to ditch it as word spreads about exploitation of tourists while there are so many cheaper comparable locations abroad.”
