Blue Water Autonomy, Inc., the technology company building autonomous ships for the U.S. Navy, reportedly received $14M in seed funding to develop the captainless ship.
Founded in 2024 by experts formerly of Amazon Robotics, iRobot, and the U.S. Navy, Blue Water Autonomy has developed a full-stack autonomy suite that started saltwater testing and developed concept ship designs in under a year.
Reportedly, Blue Water Autonomy is undergoing open-water trials with a 100-ton autonomous test vessel near the Boston coast.
With this seed funding, the company will expand its engineering team, speed up ship testing, and integrate different payloads onto its platform.
The startup claimed to have assembled an autonomy technology stack and completed initial conceptual designs for its line of fully autonomous marine vessels within just a year. [Source: Indian Express]
With this, autonomous ships may sail even before flying cars hit the skies.

About Blue Water Autonomy
Blue Water Autonomy is among the fast-growing defence startups in the US, which are growing with massive investments in defence technology.
The startup is now a key player in maritime innovation.
At a time with tensions in the Pacific and Black Sea, when the US’s shipbuilding capabilities are behind China, this technology could offer a cost-effective way to enhance deterrence without increasing the personnel.
The shipbuilding startup is expected to support the US in maintaining its presence and security across strategic trade routes, including volatile regions such as the Red Sea.
“Sea power has been the bedrock of America’s security and prosperity for centuries,” said Rylan Hamilton, co-founder and CEO of Blue Water Autonomy. “We believe the entire maritime economy is in need of transformation — it starts with supporting the U.S. Navy which needs dynamic industrial partners to bring top technology to its sailors, including ocean-going, fully autonomous ships.”
Other than defence, Blue Water Autonomy is also aiming to crack the commercial markets.
Reportedly, its autonomous systems can transform cargo shipping, offshore energy, fishing, as well as luxury maritime experiences.
