Elon Musk-led Tesla Inc. has begun accelerated hiring in India, a clear indication they intend to enter the Indian market soon. The EV giant is hiring for 13 roles, including customer-facing and back-end jobs in Mumbai, Maharashtra.
Tesla to enter the Indian Market
India & Tesla have engaged on and off for years now, but with high import taxes, Tesla has so far refrained from entering the Indian market. Now that the basic customs duty on luxury vehicles costing more than $40,000 has reduced from 110% to 70%, it is more favourable for the automaker.
Given that Tesla saw its first annual decline in sales last year, the foray into the Indian EV market may give the company much-needed momentum. India's electric car market is still in its nascent stages, but given the size of the market, it has enormous potential to rank among the top nations. Approximately one million EV cars are sold in India each year.
Tesla Inc. put up job postings on LinkedIn yesterday with the following roles:
-
Customer Support Specialist
-
Order Operations Specialist
-
Business Operations Analyst
-
Service Manager
-
Inside Sales Advisor
-
Store Manager
-
Delivery Operations Specialist
-
Parts Advisor
-
Service Advisor
-
Customer Support Supervisor
-
Service Technician
The wide range of roles Tesla is hiring for shows that the automaker is aiming to strengthen its sales and aftersales operations team in India.

The PM Modi-Elon Musk Meeting in the US
Tesla's renewed interest in India follows PM Modi’s meeting with Elon Musk and President Trump in Washington last week. The exact nature of the meeting was unclear back then, but PM Modi took to X to say, “discussed various issues, including those he is passionate about, such as space, mobility, technology, and innovation,” regarding Elon Musk.
Musk, a prominent member of President Trump's Cabinet, has made it harder to differentiate between his political and corporate interests. President Trump, when asked about Tesla’s CEO’s intentions to meet PM Modi, did not clarify whether Musk met the Indian PM in his capacity as the CEO of his private companies or as a representative of the DOGE team.
But with Tesla's hiring spree in India, we now know CEO Elon Musk had intentions to enter India, as the company had been waiting for the right moment to indulge in the world's largest automobile market.
Tesla's entry into the Indian market is expected to bring numerous benefits, including giving Indian consumers access to cutting-edge electric cars, generating employment opportunities, and promoting the growth and development of the country's electric vehicle sector.
