Pratap Sarnaik receives the first delivery of Tesla Model Y
Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik on Friday received the first delivery of Tesla’s Model Y from the carmaker’s newly launched showroom in Mumbai’s Bandra Kurla Complex.
Minister books Model Y
Sarnaik booked the Model Y a day after the American automaker opened its first showroom in India in July.
He shared plans to gift the car to his grandson as a symbolic step towards building “early awareness” of green mobility.
“I have taken delivery of the Tesla to spread awareness about electric mobility among citizens, especially the younger generation. I want children to see these cars early and understand the importance of sustainable transportation,” said the Shiv Sena minister.
He remarked that Maharashtra has set the goal of leading in a major EV transition in the next decade, aligned with PM Modi’s clean mobility vision.
The state has also announced multiple incentives, including toll exemptions on Atal Setu and the Samruddhi Expressway.
“Even if the cost is slightly higher today, what matters more is setting the right example and accelerating EV adoption,” said Pratap Sarnaik.
The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has already obtained nearly 5,000 e-buses for public transport, with charging stations being set up across the state.
According to a Bloomberg report, Tesla received over 600 bookings for the Model Y in India on July 15, the day it opened its Mumbai showroom.
Features and pricing of Tesla Model Y
The Tesla Model Y is being sold in India in the rear-wheel-drive (RWD) configuration.
There are two variants, the standard RWD priced at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom), and the Long Range RWD priced at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom).
The Tesla Model Y is priced significantly higher in India than in global markets due to heavy import duties on completely built-up units.
The standard RWD Model Y can go up to 500km on a single full charge, while the Long Range RWD version stretches that to 622km.
The standard model does 0 to 100 km/h in 5.9 seconds, while the Long Range takes 5.6 seconds. Both versions can attain a top speed of 201 km/h.
With fast charging, you can add around 238km of range in just 15 minutes on the standard model and 267km on the Long Range.
On the outside, the Model Y keeps things clean and simple, designed for better aerodynamics.
MoneyControl reported the model having smooth curves, sharp edges, and full LED lights, including lightbars at the front and back. The wheels have a modern look, and the car uses eight cameras for driver-assistance features.
The insides have aluminium accents, premium materials, and two touchscreens, a 15.4-inch at the front and an 8-inch for rear passengers.
The front seats are powered and ventilated, while the second-row seats get power folding, heating, and two-way adjustment.
The doors and footwells have ambient lighting along with a nine-speaker audio system.
Tesla has worked on making the cabin quieter with an updated suspension and laminated glass for the windows and roof.
The Model Y comes in six colour options with a standard Stealth Grey shade. The other shades cost extra, which can be up to Rs 1.85 lakh more.
