“Expertise, excellence, and proven success—that's what defines us,” shares Laveena Soni, co-founder of corporate law firm Emerge Legal and a skilled corporate lawyer, in an exclusive interview with Startup Pedia.

In the legal field in India, you’ll see how much expertise and excellence is valued. For first-generation professionals, starting a career in law comes with its own set of formidable challenges.

“When I started my journey, litigation wasn’t my primary interest. I was passionate about helping businesses make their legal strategies. However, corporate law firms in my hometown were scarce, leaving limited opportunities to gain the right expertise. That’s when I decided to build my own firm from the ground up,” Laveena tells Startup Pedia.

Laveena and Raman Gupta, co-founded Emerge Legal. It is a Gurgaon-based corporate law firm that caters to all corporate legal needs under the sun.

In just two years, it has secured reputed clients like Louis Vuitton, Lenskart, Patanjali, Burger King, and Healthkart.

HOW IT ALL STARTED

Hailing from Ludhiana, Laveena Soni comes from a business family.

She did her LLB from Punjab University. Right after college, she began working in the field of compliance and contracts.

“Corporate law always intrigued me. I knew I would want to spend my life doing this. I started looking for corporate firms to join after I finished my degree. But back then, there weren’t many,” she says.

Although Laveena Soni was determined to start a corporate law firm, she was still carving her path in the legal field. She had a clear vision of the ‘what’ and ‘why’ but needed the right partner to help navigate the ‘how.’

Almost as if destiny intended it, she met Raman Gupta.

Coincidentally, Raman is also from Ludhiana. At the time, he was working as the General Counsel for Cinepolis India.

“When I met Raman, I told him what I wanted to do. And he was aligned with the vision. Together, we decided to start Emerge Legal. He knew the industry inside out. I love to put it this way — he had the expertise, I had the zeal,” Laveena tells Startup Pedia.

Emerge Legal was established in 2022 and set up its base and first office in Gurgaon.

The legal entrepreneurs started the corporate law firm with a singular, unwavering mission—to cater to businesses and do the heavy lifting associated with Audits, Litigation, M&A, Risk Analysis, Compliance, Contracts, and everything else in the field.

EARLY CHALLENGES

Initially, Emerge Legal battled with quite a few challenges, as any other business in its first phase.

The legal entrepreneurs wanted to give wings to their Gurgaon-based law firm, but the hiccup was that the firm was a newcomer. And businesses do not really prefer newcomers to handle their legal operations.

“The challenge was that we wanted to work with large corporations. This is because they are the ones who hire law firms in the first place. Other smaller startups and businesses rely on independent lawyers for their legal needs. It’s more of a project-to-project thing for them,” says Laveena.

What followed was a relentless effort—the legal entrepreneurs began reaching out to numerous companies, understanding their needs, explaining their proposals, talking about their value propositions, convincing the businesses to take a chance on them, and ultimately securing them as clients for Emerge Legal.

Eventually, Emerge Legal took off as a bankable, corporate law firm that did what it said. The legal entrepreneurs started witnessing their clientele grow and their umbrella of services expand.
