OpenAI has launched Sora 2, a new video and audio generation model, which the company claims is more physically accurate, realistic, and controllable than prior systems.
The company stated that the new model can generate scenes such as Olympic-level gymnastics, paddleboard stunts, and skating moves while still respecting physical constraints.
Along with the model, OpenAI has also announced a new iOS app called Sora, powered by Sora 2.
The app functions like a social platform, allowing users to create content, remix others’ videos, browse a personalised feed, and participate in cameos.
Sam Altman announces launch of Sora
“We are launching a new app called Sora,” announced OpenAI CEO Sam Altman on social media. “This is a combination of a new model called Sora 2, and a new product that makes it easy to create, share, and view videos,” he shared.
He further shared: “This feels to many of us like the “ChatGPT for creativity” moment, and it feels fun and new. There is something great about making it really easy and fast to go from idea to result, and the new social dynamics that emerge.”
“Creativity could be about to go through a Cambrian explosion, and along with it, the quality of art and entertainment can drastically increase,” Altman remarked. “Even in the very early days of playing with Sora, it’s been striking to many of us how open the playing field suddenly feels.”

More about Sora 2
The company claims that by analysing a video of a person, the model can place that individual (including their appearance and voice) into any generated scene.
“The model is also a big leap forward in controllability, able to follow intricate instructions spanning multiple shots while accurately persisting world state. It excels at realistic, cinematic, and anime styles,” OpenAI said in a blog post.
Sora 2 aims to compete with YouTube and TikTok.
“With cameos, you can drop yourself straight into any Sora scene with remarkable fidelity after a short one-time video-and-audio recording in the app to verify your identity and capture your likeness,” the company said.
OpenAI claims that Sora 2 has the artificial intelligence ability to create lifelike video content. The model can generate synchronised dialogues, sound effects, and realistic, physically accurate movements, making the videos far more immersive and true-to-life than before.
With this, OpenAI now directly competes with leading platforms owned by Google, Meta, and ByteDance, by changing how content is created and shared online.
