ChatGPT President announces 'Study Mode'

In a post on social media platform X, President and co-founder Greg Brockman wrote, “Introducing study mode in ChatGPT — step by step guidance for students rather than quick answers.”

The ChatGPT study mode offers personalised feedback to track progress and supports knowledge retention.

"When students engage with study mode, they're met with guiding questions that calibrate responses to their objective and skill level to help them build deeper understanding. Study mode is designed to be engaging and interactive, and to help students learn something -- not just finish something," OpenAI said in a statement.

ChatGPT has become one of the most widely used learning tools in the world, with students turning to it to work through challenging homework problems, exam preparation, and to explore new concepts.

"But its use in education has also raised an important question: how do we ensure it is used to support real learning, and doesn't just offer solutions without helping students make sense of them? We've built study mode to help answer this question," it said.

How to use 'Study Mode'? A step-by-step guide

Step 1:  Log in to ChatGPT

Open chat.openai.com and log in with your OpenAI account. Only logged-in users can access Study Mode.

Step 2:  Check eligibility

The feature is available to users on Free, Plus, Pro, and Team plans. ChatGPT Edu users will get access in the coming weeks.

Step 3:  Select the right model

Select GPT-4 (or GPT-4-turbo, if on Plus/Pro) for the best Study Mode experience, as the feature is integrated within this version.

Step 4:  Search for the Study Mode toggle

Once logged in, find the “Study and learn” option in the tools menu, which allows Study Mode for your current session.

Step 5:  Ask a learning-based question

Enter a question related to what you want to learn, such as math problems, exam prep topics, or explanations of a concept.

Step 6:  Follow the guided prompts

Study Mode responds with step-by-step explanations, hints, and guiding questions, without directly giving the final answer.

Step 7:  Seek personalised feedback

The model recalls your skill level from previous chats and adjusts difficulty accordingly, giving feedback so that you can improve.
