The Maharashtra government has introduced a new policy under which if the driver of ride-hailing services like Ola and Uber cancels a confirmed ride, the passenger will receive a penalty payment credited to their account.
The revised Aggregator Cabs Policy 2025 protects the rights of commuters, as it becomes inconvenient if the booked ride is cancelled by the driver all of a sudden.
This policy completely changed how cab cancellations are handled.
Until now, commuters were penalised for cancelling a ride, while the cab was on its way for pick-up. However, if the driver cancelled, the penalty used to be usually absorbed by the platform or ignored.

With the new rules, cab drivers who cancel after accepting a ride will face a financial penalty as well, and the affected customer will get the same amount as compensation.
According to the new policy, if the driver cancels the rider, then either Rs 100 or 10 per cent of the fare, whichever is lesser, will be credited to the customer’s account.
On the other hand, if the customer cancels the ride, then 50 per cent or Rs 50, whichever is lesser, will be deposited in the driver’s account.

Pricing cap & discounts
Also, there is a check on the pricing cap. As specified in the new policy, the cab company cannot charge more than 1.5 times higher than the standard fee.
In terms of discounts, the ride-hailing apps can offer discounts up to 25% during non-peak traffic times. The fare structure will now be inspected by the regional transport authorities.
Policy covers safety issues
For safety issues, it is mandatory for cabs to install a GPS tracking system, and all drivers have to undergo a police verification.
Also, women passengers can opt for an all-women car pool and a female driver.
