A 55-year-old woman from Mumbai recently experienced a harrowing incident after booking a cleaning service on an app for her Diwali preparations. Lina Mhatre's routine festive cleaning became a nightmare when she discovered that gold ornaments worth Rs 4 lakh were missing from her cupboard soon after the cleaners left her residence.
What actually happened?
Lina Mhatre, a resident of Rishikesh Society in Dahisar East, hired a cleaning team via the No Broker app on October 21 to assist with her Diwali preparations. Unfortunately, her celebrations were ruined when she realized that her valuable gold ornaments were nowhere to be found after the cleaners had completed their job. Distraught and shocked, Mhatre immediately reported the theft to the MHB police station, triggering an investigation into the matter.
The prompt action taken by Mhatre led to the arrest of one of the suspected culprits, 27-year-old Arbaz Khan. Additional suspects, Santosh Omprakash Yadav and Sufiyan Nazeer Ahmad Soudar were also identified through the CCTV footage of the building.

While Khan is currently in custody, authorities are verifying his background to see if he has a history of criminal offenses. Moreover, questions have been raised regarding the screening process conducted by No Broker before hiring these workers.
This incident sheds light on the importance of background verification for all service employees, not just cleaning staff, to ensure the safety and security of customers.
Despite the increasing popularity of cleaning and maintenance apps, there appears to be a significant lack of oversight on background verification across the industry. While these platforms promote trustworthiness and professionalism, the absence of concrete assurances regarding background checks raises concerns about the safety of customers. Many companies claim to conduct verifications, but the lack of transparency and evidence casts doubts on the efficacy of these procedures.
As Diwali approaches, there is a surge in demand for home cleaning and other services within the app-based service industry. Customers rely on these platforms for convenience and efficiency; however, the recent incident highlights the importance of ensuring the integrity and credibility of service employees. Enhanced measures, such as mandatory police verification and rigorous background checks, are essential to safeguard the interests of customers and maintain trust in these service providers.
