Recently, a social media influencer had sparked a debate on whether the Bengaluru-based D2C brand Mokobara was indulging in ‘white labelling.’

The influencer had pointed out that identical bags were being sold at Alibaba and other e-commerce websites for a very small amount as compared to the brand's prices.

This had given air to the accusations surrounding the brand of whether it buys products at a lower cost from Chinese manufacturers and then sells them at zoomed prices in the Indian market.

MOKOBARA’S RESPONSE: HIT OR FAIL?

According to Moneycontrol, the luggage and bag brand has now responded to the backlash it has been receiving.

The company took to X (formerly Twitter) to launch its new bag inspired by the Naruto Series.

Mokobara's post read, “While the world debates the chicken or the egg, we’re focussed on what we do best - creating originals worth imitating."

In the same post, it added, “Dropping now: the Moko x Naruto Series - from one fan to another.”

Almost as if taking a dig at the backlash, the company offered a discount coupon code called WHITELABEL for customers to get a 10% off on “originality.”

The post received mixed reactions from people. While some people were impressed with the marketing and response, others were disappointed.

X user Pratham wrote, “Oh, I am not sure about this move team :/”

Vishal Narayanaswamy (founder of SnackerFoods) responded by writing, “Yeah looks like China copied you? Nice spin.”

Another X user by the name of Dipti Shah stated, “Originality speaks louder than assumptions. Let the products do the talking. Class dismissed.”

Someone also wrote, taking a dig at the launch itself, “Isn’t Naruto Japanese? I thought your thing was Chinese.”
