Entrepreneur-investor Kunal Bahl has urged Indian startups to incorporate locally rather than in foreign jurisdictions like Singapore or the US, calling the practice "outdated" in today's business scenario.

"For years, Indian founders thought incorporating in the US or Singapore made fundraising and exits easier. In 2025, that's outdated," Bahl posted on X. "Today, incorporating in India isn't just patriotic—it's pragmatic."

Kunal Bahl bats for sustainability over chasing valuation

The Snapdeal co-founder and Shark Tank India judge earlier commented that instead of chasing unicorns (startups that are valued at over a billion dollars), founders should focus on building sustainable, profitable businesses that create employment and provide long-term value.

“I don’t like the term unicorns. It's a mythical creature. But a business that’s generating Rs. 100 Cr in revenue, is profitable, and has been running for 15 years - that’s an unicorn,” he remarked. [Source: Fortune India]

He explained that “India needs thousands more unicorns” that have the potential to thrive long-term while generating profits and providing value rather than those companies that keep “chasing” valuations.

In his recent post, Bahl remarked about Venture Capital (VC): "Nearly all VCs are funding Indian entities," he said dismissing the notion that overseas incorporation provides fundraising advantages. "Indian investors now back all kinds of startups, including DeepTech and AI, and one doesn't need to find investors overseas to fund these spaces.
