While PM Modi called the relationship forward-looking and comprehensive, the exchange comes at a time when trade frictions and shifting geopolitical dynamics are testing both sides.

PM Modi Responds to Trump’s Praise

Taking to X, PM Modi wrote:

“Deeply appreciate and fully reciprocate President Trump's sentiments and positive assessment of our ties. India and the US have a very positive and forward-looking Comprehensive and Global Strategic Partnership.”

His message came shortly after Trump praised him in Washington, telling reporters:

“Narendra Modi is a great prime minister. I’ll always be friends with Modi. The U.S. and India share a very special relationship.”

Trump’s remarks were widely covered as a reaffirmation of his personal rapport with Modi, even as he acknowledged certain disagreements on policy matters.

Trade Disputes and Geopolitical Context

Despite the positive tone, Trump highlighted economic frictions between the two nations.

Referring to Indian tariffs, he said: “We put a very big tariff on India, 50 per cent, a very high tariff.”

The comment underscored ongoing trade tensions, even as both sides continue to expand cooperation in defense, technology, and security.

The remarks also came against a wider geopolitical backdrop. Trump recently criticized India’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping, warning that the U.S. risked “losing” India and Russia to Beijing’s influence.

Modi’s response, however, focused on strengthening the India–U.S. partnership, signaling New Delhi’s intent to keep ties with Washington on a solid footing.
