After the long-standing debate of whether non-natives who settle down in the city of Bengaluru should learn local languages like Kannada, another issue has come to the surface.

It is about the landlords in Bengaluru.

Recently, taking to LinkedIn, Shravan Tickoo who is the founder of a community SaaS platform, called the city’s landlords a “menace.”

Stating an incident involving a couple who were denied their security deposit by their landlord, Tickoo said such cases had become rampant.

SECURITY DEPOSIT VERSUS PROPERTY MAINTENANCE

Shravan’s post highlighted the case of a couple who had moved to a 2BHK flat in a Bengaluru society. The monthly rent for the flat was Rs 55,000.

While they paid the rent due every month, they also faced issues like leakages in the property.

Tickoo wrote, “The couple paid the rent every month, but whenever there was leakage or any issue with the property, the landlord didn’t even pick up the phone.”

The landlord did not communicate directly and instead sent a message through the property maintenance person. The message to the tenants was, “It’s your headache to fix it.”

To maintain the property and address issues like leaks, the couple spent more than Rs 1 lakh from their pocket.

But when they left the flat and asked for their security deposit of Rs 1.75 lakhs from the landlord, the owner refused it.

They just sent a text message stating, “The flat needs maintenance, so you shouldn’t get anything back.”

To resolve the matter peacefully, the couple was ready to get one month’s rent deducted from the security deposit.

Shravan wrote, “The landlord stopped responding and arrogantly stated, "Do whatever you can, but this is what it is.”

The couple finally left the flat without getting anything from the owner.

RENTING IS LIKE ‘MODERN-DAY EXPLOITATION’

Highlighting how landlords in Bengaluru are very proactive when it comes to increasing the rent and calling and texting the tenant, Tickoo stated, “When it comes to increasing rent, landlords are the first to call and ping you, but when there’s a problem, it’s suddenly your problem.”

“For those who aren’t native Bengalureans, this often feels like a form of modern-day exploitation,” he added.

Stressing the fact that such issues between landlords and tenants in Bengaluru are increasing, he also said that he has seen this happen with a lot of people.

Shravan Tickoo advised people to first focus on the people in the city and be careful while renting or purchasing homes.

He concluded with a warning, “Otherwise, this city of dreams for so many of us can quickly turn into a nightmare you never expected.”

A LinkedIn user, Sachin G, responded to the post and commented, “Bhaai maine isliye kam-se-kam 10 job offers ko clearly mana kar diya who asked me to relocate to Bangalore as it's 5 days WFO, ki mujhe koi shauq nahi ki 10-11 mahine ka Security Deposit tumhe du aur baad me apne paise ke liye ladu.”

Suggesting a solution, another user wrote, “It would be good to see a platform where tenants and landlords rate each other .. this ought to solve this problem to a good extent if not completely.”

One user also wrote, “Bangalore has become uninhabitable.”
