At an all-hands meeting, Amazon Web Services (AWS) unit’s CEO Matt Garman directed a strong message to the employees. He said the company’s 5-day per week work-from-office policy will be effected from January 2025 as informed earlier and those employees who do not want to follow the new policy can quit.

Garman has reasoned there are other companies for the employees who do not want to work in “that environment”.

He explained that his statement should not make a wrong impression. "By the way, I don't mean that in a bad way," he said, adding "We want to be in an environment where we're working together."

The CEO’s point

Garman elaborated that the company wants to innovate on interesting products and that would not be possible if “we are not in person.”

He disclosed that all top executives in the company support the 5-day per week work-from-office policy.

"I'm actually quite excited about this change," Garman stated. "I know not everyone is.”

He explained the difficulty in accomplishing the company's goals with the current three days of in-office work. Garman said under the existing policy, "We didn't really accomplish anything, like we didn't get to work together and learn from each other," because employees were in different offices on different days.

Moreover, the company's leadership principles were difficult to follow in the three-day-per-week requirement.

"You can't internalize them by reading them on the website, you really have to experience them day-to-day," he added.
