Micron Technology has inaugurated its Semiconductor Assembly, Test and Packaging (ATMP) facility in Sanand, marking a significant milestone for India’s chip manufacturing ambitions.

All you need to know about Micron's Semiconductor ATMP facility, Sanand

The plant, opened on Saturday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is the first facility of its kind in the country that houses a 500,000-square-foot clean room, the world’s largest single raised-floor clean room dedicated to semiconductor assembly.

US-based Micron Technology is a global leader in advanced semiconductor systems, specialising in memory and storage solutions.

The Sanand facility will assemble and test DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) and NAND flash memory, which are essential components for PCs, smartphones, data centres, and SSD storage devices.

The combined investment for Phase 1 and Phase 2 of the project stands at $2.7 billion, with further expansion planned in the second phase.

Micron has already begun commercial operations, shipping its first revenue-generating product, a finished DRAM module for personal computers, to Dell.

The company also intends to supply major global clients, including ASUS and Qualcomm.

Of the 1,300 employees at the facility, nearly half are fresh engineering graduates from Gujarat and neighbouring states who received specialised semiconductor training before joining.

The manufacturing process at the plant includes wafer thinning, chip dicing, component assembly, rigorous testing, and integration into memory modules or SSDs.

Micron has set aggressive output goals to produce tens of millions of integrated circuit (IC) chips this year and scale up to nearly one billion ICs annually by 2027.

Speaking at the inauguration, PM Modi described the ATMP facility as a landmark achievement in India’s semiconductor journey.

The Prime Minister said, "While the AI Summit introduced the world to India's AI prowess, today's event is proof of India's commitment to technology leadership.”

Referring to India’s recent advances in artificial intelligence, he added that the new facility demonstrates the nation’s broader commitment to technological leadership.

The project is also being viewed as a symbol of the growing India–US partnership in semiconductors and AI.

US Ambassador Sergio Gor called it India’s first major semiconductor assembly and test plant, saying the $2.7 billion investment represents not just a factory, but American technological leadership, deeper bilateral ties, and a shared commitment to building resilient global supply chains.
