Fresh concerns over Bengaluru’s infrastructure have resurfaced after prominent industry leaders publicly called on the Karnataka government to accelerate upgrades, warning that the city risks losing its competitive edge.

Former Infosys CFOMohandas Pai took to X to urge state leaders to act swiftly, tagging Karnataka IT Minister Priyank Kharge and deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar.

“Please market Bengaluru vigorously. We are losing out at the margin. Please improve our infrastructure,” Pai wrote. Addressing Shivakumar directly, he added that the city needs “more action” and the “targeted finishing of metro, infra to change the narrative for Bengaluru.”

Last October, Biocon Chief Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw met Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar to discuss an action plan to fix key infra bottlenecks in Bengaluru.

Echoing Pai's sentiment, the biotech entrepreneur has also appealed on the urgency of reforms. “Bengaluru must double down on improving infrastructure. Roads, pavements and waste management. PRR & ORR must be world class. We simply don’t have the luxury of time,” she posted.

Her reference to the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR) and Outer Ring Road (ORR) points at two key corridors seen as critical to easing congestion and supporting the city’s expanding tech and industrial hubs.

Business leaders have long argued that without world-class road networks and reliable urban services, Bengaluru’s attractiveness for global investors and talent could diminish.

The coordinated push from Pai and Mazumdar-Shaw indicates a mounting pressure on policymakers to not only complete marquee projects like metro expansions but also address core civic issues such as road quality, pedestrian infrastructure and waste management.

As competition among Indian cities intensifies for investment, startups and multinational offices, industry voices are increasingly vocal that infrastructure execution, not just announcements, will determine whether Bengaluru retains its status as the country’s leading innovation hub.
