You are in the middle of writing an important email or trying to translate a sign while travelling in a remote area, and you turn to an AI tool for help. You type in your prompt, hit send, and then… you wait. The signal bar on your phone drops to one bar. Finally, you get the dreaded message: "No Internet Connection."
In today’s world, where everyone is becoming increasingly dependent on AI tools to get tasks done, we need an internet connection to do so. Popular AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini use servers to generate answers, but struggle when there is low or no internet connectivity. This problem is more prevalent in rural areas and regions located near dense forests and hills.
To solve this issue, Bengaluru-based startup Sarvam AI has launched Sarvam Edge, a model that challenges global tech giants and redefines the technological landscape in India
The new tool is designed to run complex tasks such as speech recognition, translation, and text-to-speech on smartphones and laptops completely offline.
Why does this Matter?
The introduction of India’s first-of-its-kind offline AI tool can solve three serious problems that most users face today: data privacy, speed, and reliability.
When a user engages with a standard AI tool, their data travels to a remote server for processing, which often raises concerns regarding the security and storage of personal information.
According to Sarvam AI, data never leaves the device when using its offline tool to translate conversations or ask questions. Because this processing occurs locally, the risk of data being transmitted to distant servers is eliminated, effectively preventing potential data breaches.
Since Sarvam Edge does not need to "talk" to the cloud, the usual delays are gone. Responses are near-instant, providing a seamless and more natural experience for the user.
In India, internet connectivity can be dicey. However, Sarvam Edge remains fully functional even in areas with low or no connectivity.
Functions of Sarvam AI’s Sarvam Edge Tool
Sarvam Edge provides three main important functions to users relying on productivity without an internet connection.
Multilingual Speech Recognition
One of its standout features is the ability to understand and transcribe speech in about 10 Indian languages in real time, making it a powerful tool for the country with its high linguistic diversity. The model provides high-accuracy speech-to-text without depending on cloud servers. As per reports, a unique advantage here is its automatic language detection, where users don't need to manually toggle settings when switching between languages.
Bidirectional Translation
Through the bidirectional translation feature provided by the Sarvam Edge tool, users can cover 11 Indian languages, including English, and it supports over 110 language pairs. Sarvam AI says this feature allows users to translate a document on their system or have a live conversation with someone in their native language, ensuring that the meaning is conveyed accurately and instantly.
Advanced Text-to-Speech and Accessibility
Beyond its recognition and translation capabilities, the Sarvam Edge model integrates a localized text-to-speech engine, allowing users to interact with it in multiple Indian regional languages. This also allows for near-instantaneous audio playback of written text, which is critical for users with visual impairments or those in sectors like education and public services where immediate audio feedback is required.
About Sarvam AI
Sarvam AI is a Bengaluru-based startup co-founded by Dr. Vivek Raghavan and Dr. Pratyush Kumar in 2023. Unlike global tech giants that focus on English-first models, Sarvam develops solutions designed to handle India’s unique linguistic diversity.
The company has gained significant recognition for developing voice-first models capable of running on everyday hardware rather than supercomputers.
Backed by major investors like Lightspeed and Khosla Ventures, Sarvam AI was recently selected under the IndiaAI Mission to build the nation’s foundational AI model, effectively creating a digital public utility similar to what UPI did for payments.
