Mitra Café, one of Kolkata’s most cherished eateries, has witnessed a sixfold rise in its annual order volumes over the past five years since joining the Zomato platform in 2020. According to the company, Mitra Café’s annual order volumes have grown from more than 23,280 in 2020 to over 1,42,580 orders in 2025.

How did Mitra Café surge its annual order volume?

The growth comes as the115-year-old iconic restaurant continues to balance its century-old culinary traditions with modern operational strategies and digital distribution channels.

Founded in 1910 by Shri Sushil Roy in the North Kolkata neighbourhood, Mitra Café began as a modest eatery rooted in community culture.

The restaurant was named after Roy’s friend Ganesh Mitra, and the name has endured as a tribute to that friendship for over a century.

Over the decades, the café evolved into a popular gathering spot for residents, students, and professionals, becoming a part of the city’s social and food culture.

Today, Mitra Café is led by Tapash Roy, the Managing Director and a member of the founding family, who continues to preserve the establishment’s legacy.

“Mitra Café is more than just a restaurant for us. It represents generations of trust, hard work and a deep connection with our customers,” said Tapash Roy.

“While we remain committed to preserving the recipes and standards that define our legacy, we have also focused on strengthening our operations and ensuring greater consistency in every order. Partnering with Zomato has enabled us to reach more customers and strengthen our presence while staying true to the heritage that has shaped us for over a century," he added.

Known for signature Bengali snacks such as Brain Chop, Fish Kabiraji and Gondhoraj Lime Chicken Pakoras, Mitra Café has long been associated with Kolkata’s rich culinary traditions.

Over the years, the restaurant has expanded its offerings to include a wider multi-cuisine menu while maintaining the flavours that made it famous.

What started as a single outlet, Mitra Café expanded to 12 outlets across Kolkata and six additional locations in other markets, including cities in West Bengal, Bengaluru and Bhubaneswar.

Alongside the surge in online orders, the café has focused on improving operational efficiency by maintaining stricter menu hygiene standards and reducing kitchen preparation time.

It has also participated in marketing campaigns and advertisements on the Zomato platform to boost visibility and drive sales.

“The growth of Mitra Café reflects their strong legacy and dedication to authentic flavours. We’re happy to be their partners as they expand thoughtfully and bring their food to even more customers,” said Aditya Mangla, CEO of Zomato.

Launched in 2010 by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah, Zomato is a restaurant discovery and food delivery platform.
