Foxconn hires 30,000 staff at new iPhone assembly unit
Taiwan-based Hon Hai Precision Industry Co (Foxconn) has hired about 30,000 workers for its new iPhone assembly unit at Devanahalli, near Bengaluru, in around eight to nine months.
All about Foxconn's new hiring
Around 80 per cent of the workforce at the 300-acre facility in Karnataka are women, who are first-time job seekers in the 19–24 age group, people cited by ET said.
The factory began test production during April–May with iPhone 16 models and is now assembling the latest iPhone 17 Pro Max devices, according to sources quoted in the report.
The firm has built six large dormitories for workers, several of which are already operational, with additional facilities under construction.
Once the plant reaches peak capacity next year, it is expected to hire over 50,000 people.
Reportedly, the Devanahalli facility would house more women workers at a single location than any other government or private establishment in the country.
Workers from neighbouring states have migrated, and the campus is expected to develop into a mini township with residential, medical, educational, and recreational facilities.
Workers receive free accommodation, subsidised meals, and earn an average wage of around Rs 18,000 per month, among the highest for women in blue-collar manufacturing roles.
Project investments
Foxconn is investing nearly Rs 20,000 crore in the project, which is reportedly India's largest factory by both employment and production capacity once fully operational.
The new facility is expected to eventually house up to a dozen iPhone assembly lines, compared with around four at present, and will outdo Foxconn's existing iPhone plant in Tamil Nadu.
Recruits undergo six weeks of on-the-job training before being inducted into production, as Apple works with partners to develop skills and deepen the local manufacturing ecosystem.
