A record-setting vehicle number plate auction has put India’s luxury collectibles market firmly in the spotlight.

The number plate

A vintage VIP registration number, “DDC 001,” was recently sold for a whopping Rs 2.08 crore, making it one of the most expensive vehicle number plates ever auctioned in the country.

The auction was organised by Big Boy Toyz, a renowned luxury used car dealer in India, in association with the launch of their newly launched Auction House, which is claimed to be the first of its kind in India for luxury collectibles.

Specifics

The number plate, categorised as a rare vintage registration, belonged to Jatin Ahuja, the founder of Big Boy Toyz. During the prestigious auction, the bidding process accelerated quickly, finally concluding at Rs 2.08 crores. It is reported that the winning bid was made by Kiran Kolpakula, a buyer from Guntur in Andhra Pradesh.

“We didn’t see this coming. History created," read a post on the Instagram handle of the dealership.

Response of dealer  

Speaking on the significance of the auction, Ahuja emphasised the growing maturity of India’s luxury collectibles ecosystem. 

“When you’re dealing with assets of this value, transparency and verification matter more than anything else. The Rs 2.08 crore auction of DDC 0001 reinforced that collectors are ready for a platform they can believe in, no matter where they come from,"he said, as quoted by Cartoq.
