In October 2019, Mannat Mehmi, a 12-year-old living in Patiala, fell ill with jaundice.

Someone suggested that she try goat milk to improve her strength and immunity.

But getting fresh goat milk was a hassle.

So Mannat’s father decided to buy a goat and raise it on the third floor of their house.

“We raised the goat only for our family’s milk consumption needs. Somehow, things scaled, and we established the India Goat Milk Farm. We started it as teenagers and have been fully involved in the day-to-day operations of the farm since day one. We do it alongside managing and excelling in our academics,” Mannat Mehmi tells Startup Pedia in an exclusive interview.

Founded in 2020 and based out of the Raipur village in Punjab, India, Goat Milk Farm is a milk and dairy venture that offers fresh goat milk, paneer, and ghee. It also breeds and sells the Saanen breed of goats.

In FY25, the venture clocked an average of Rs 80,000 to Rs 1.5 lakh every month.

HOW IT ALL BEGAN

In 2019, Mannat Mehmi was 12 years old, and her sister Eknoor Mehmi was 10 years old. They live in the city of Patiala in Punjab.

Mannat was in sixth standard when she fell ill with jaundice. Her immunity weakened drastically.

“One of our elders suggested that I should consume goat milk to recover faster. They said that the milk is great not just for recovery but also for daily immunity and growth. But we couldn’t find any fresh goat milk around. So we went online and bought a goat with our father’s help. It cost us Rs 19,000. We decided to raise it on the third floor of our house,” Mannat Mehmi explains.

The goat gave milk after three months, and almost immediately, Mannat and Eknoor could see the benefits of consuming the goat milk.

Seasonal colds and coughs, regular weakness, and other everyday problems vanished.

Very soon, their parents replaced regular supplements with goat milk in their daughters’ diet.

For the next year or so, the goat and its babies were enough to sustain the Mehmi household’s goat milk needs.

Eventually, word spread about their goats and fresh milk. Neighbours would ask them for a liter of milk, and friends would demand regular milk to be sent to their houses.

“Initially, we used to give out goat milk for free. But we noted the surging demand and decided to establish it as a full-fledged business. Eknoor and I were very young then and had school to attend as well. But we told our parents that we would manage everything, and they believed us. We loved the goats, and raising them was like raising our pets,” Mannat shares.

INDIA GOAT MILK FARM: A NUTRITIOUS AND ORGANIC PROMISE

In 2020, Mannat Mehmi and Eknoor Mehmi established India Goat Milk Farm.

Initially, to cater to the growing demand for fresh goat milk, they bought the Beetal breed of goats.

“The starting price for one goat is around Rs 19,000. We convinced our father to pay for it — he was happy to see us being so interested in starting our milk business. In fact, our entire family loved seeing us become entrepreneurs,” Eknoor Mehmi shares with Startup Pedia.

Mannat and Eknoor would return from school, milk the goats, and package the milk in hygienic packages.

Initially, they would sell milk worth Rs 7,000 to 8,000 on a monthly basis. They priced it at Rs 400 per liter.

As revenues became steady, they decided to expand their milk and dairy startup.

The young entrepreneurs spent hours on the Internet looking for the best quality of goats. They came across the Saanen goat breed, which originates from the Saanen Valley in Central Switzerland.

The Saanen breed is recognised as one of the highest milk-producing breeds of goats. They typically have light pink skin and short hair with some black spots on their ears and nose.

According to Mannat, the price of the Saanen breed increases as per the quality of the goats.

In the beginning, Mannat and Eknoor started with the quality that cost them Rs 60,000 per goat. They bought 5 Saanen goats for a total of Rs 3 lakh.

While some of the amount came from the revenue of India Goat Milk Farm, the larger chunk of the amount was arranged by their father.

With the increased number of breeds and goats on their farm, India Goat Milk Farm soon started witnessing a daily production of 25 litres of fresh goat milk. They shifted the farm to a small piece of ancestral land about 11 kilometres away from their house.

“We now have Saanen goat breeds worth Rs 80,000 as well. The Saanen bucks are very costly as well,” Mannat notes.

Along with increasing the number of goats, entrepreneurs Mannat and Eknoor decided to add value-added products to their farm’s offerings.

Today, their goat milk farm offers fresh goat milk and paneer, as well as ghee. They receive orders via Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp from all over India and cater to them with multiple hygiene and quality checks in place.

“Our farm’s goat milk ghee has become very popular with people who look for natural ways to hydrate their skin and stay healthy. We keep receiving advance bookings for it. We sell it for Rs 4,000 per kilogram, but don’t send out more than 250 grams to one customer. Because we have to cater to everyone’s demand,” Eknoor tells Startup Pedia.

Along with milk and value-added products, India Goat Milk Farm has added a breeding wing to its business. The goats are well-fed, bred, and eventually sold to farmers, homeowners, and individuals who want Saanen quality of goats for milking and raising purposes.

“We have ensured that our farm operates on 100% organic and sustainable practices. The goats are raised in a clean environment and are fed plants like moringa that we grow ourselves,” entrepreneur Mannat Mehmi shares.

GROWTH

When Mannat and Eknoor started India Goat Milk Farm, they were in the sixth and fourth standards, respectively. They could dedicate the majority of their time to the goat milk farm’s operations.

But now, as they’re currently 17 years old and 15 years old, respectively, they aim for a balanced schedule where their school and academics receive undivided focus, while evenings are kept aside for their goat milk farm startup.

The young entrepreneurs also train young girls and women farmers and entrepreneurs who wish to learn the operations of a goat milk farm and get into the line of raising and breeding goats.

In Punjab, where wheat farming dominates, the Mehmi family believes the dairy business has a lot of untapped potential.

Currently, India Goat Milk Farm has 95+ Saanen breed goats along with a few rare goat breeds like Toggenburg and French Alpine. In FY25, the venture’s average monthly revenues fluctuated between Rs 80,000 and Rs 1.5 lakh.

While sixty percent of the revenue is generated from the breeding business, twenty percent comes from ghee, and the remaining twenty percent comes from fresh milk and training.

Mannat Mehmi and Eknoor’s goat milk farm and their efforts have received various recognitions from the Indian Government.

In 2022, they won the Future Tycoons Startup Challenge while competing with 418 other candidates. They received a cash prize of Rs 50,000. Their photo is on the wall of fame, right outside the Punjab DC’s office.

Mannat was also selected for PM Modi’s Pariksha Pe Charcha initiative and was flown to Mumbai from Patiala at the government’s expense.

LOOKING AHEAD

In the near future, Mannat and Eknoor want to expand India Goat Milk Farm into the biggest goat milk farm in the country with technology and sustainability at its core.

“Currently, the goat and goat milk market in India is largely unorganized with scattered villages and farmers rearing them. We want to streamline the operations, introduce advanced technology, and become the go-to farm for fresh goat milk and Saanen quality goat breeds in the country,” Mannat Mehmi signs off.
