Zomato is launching a new app called 'District' that offers dining, movie ticketing, and event booking services, marking its entry into a broader range of lifestyle offerings within a single platform.
Zomato CEO and founder Deepinder Goyal announced the news on social media.
“Today, Zomato and Blinkit are our two large consumer businesses, serving customers' needs at home. However, we also have one of India’s largest 'going-out' businesses, helping our customers discover restaurants for dining out," Goyal said in a note to shareholders.
Goyal sees an opportunity to expand going-out offerings by building on our dining-out business. This includes movies, sports ticketing, live performances, shopping, staycations, etc., some of which Zomato has already launched or is developing.
Zomato is now effectively challenging BookMyShow as a competitor which currently dominates the outdoor booking market in India with a 60% share.
Goyal plans to create a one-stop destination app for going out with the new District app, aiming for it to become the third large B2C business emerging from Zomato.
In the June quarter, the food-tech platform's net profit surged by 126.5 times to reach Rs 253 crore. Meanwhile, revenue increased by 74 per cent to reach Rs 4,206 crore, despite challenges faced by the broader e-commerce sector.
