@Zepto, the quick-commerce start-up, is relocating its headquarters from Mumbai’s Powai to the Indian tech capital, Bengaluru’s Sarjapur to save up to Rs 50 lakh in monthly rent.

However, the move is estimated to cost around Rs 3-4 crore.

Currently, Zepto has business verticals in Mumbai and tech and product teams in Bengaluru.

With this move, Zepto is relocating its 1,700-1,800 employees to one location and will cover the relocation expenses.

A company employee told Moneycontrol, “Of the total 1,000 employees in Mumbai, around 90 per cent are already willing to move and the remaining are in discussions to relocate. If all goes to plan, just 5-7 per cent of the 1,000 will be unable to move to Bengaluru.”

Recently valued at $3.6 billion, Zepto secured $665 million in funding and plans to expand to over 700 stores by March 2025, competing with Blinkit and Swiggy Instamart.

Social Media Reaction:

Online users have differing opinions on Zepto's relocation news, with some suspecting other underlying reasons.

One user wrote, "Mumbai is not meant to be a start-up base. Let the Bengaluru handle it. Mumbai should house companies from premium segments like finance and banking."

Another user commented, "Oh Mr Mohandas Pai will be super unhappy reading this news and so are non Kannadigas who were praying for companies to move out of Bengaluru. Welcome namma bengaluru (ನಮ್ಮ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು) Zepto and have a great stay here."

A third user replied, "Rent is excuse to escape from politics, real reason is the talent density and ecosystem of Bengaluru is far greater than Mumbai"

A fourth user wrote, "It seems like Mumbai's high rentals have finally made Zepto say, "That's it, we're outta here!" 🙅‍♂️ And who can blame them? With Bengaluru's thriving tech scene and (slightly) more affordable living costs, it's no wonder they're making the move. But don't worry, Mumbai, you'll always have your vada pavs and beaches to console you. And who knows, maybe Zepto will open a branch there again someday, when the rental prices come back down to earth."
