Volvo Trucks has unveiled India's first ‘Road Train’ system, operated by Delhivery, designed to maximise productivity in the high-volume logistics sector.

An important turning point in India's dedication to cutting-edge and environmentally conscious transportation solutions, this first-of-its-kind innovation is set to improve logistical efficiency while promoting sustainability.

Volvo Trucks’ Cutting-Edge Innovation

In an effort to take a leap forward in the logistics industry, the Indian government has decided to allow the use of road trains in India. These road trains are primarily long-distance vehicles that are used to haul heavy cargo all at once.

They have a prime mover, which is a truck in the front that pulls more than two trailers. Since these trains can replace three or more trucks, they are intended to increase logistics costs and efficiency.

According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, this achievement is a part of India's continuous attempts to upgrade its transportation infrastructure and increase the effectiveness of road transportation.

“From adopting tractor-trailers to LNG and electric trucks, Volvo has been a key enabler in our journey. Road trains are a natural next step, perfectly suited to our high-volume line-haul operations.” - Suraj Saharan, Co-founder and Chief People’s Officer at Delhivery

The Road Train’s Incredible Features

Volvo Truck's 'Road Train' features a 24-feet containerised intermediate trailer and a 44-feet semi-trailer, delivering a combined cargo volume of 144 cubic meters - 50 per cent higher than standard semi-trailers.

The Volvo 'FM 420 4X2 Road Train' is equipped with advanced safety features, including an Electronic Braking System (EBS) and Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), a 360-degree camera system, a self-steerable axle on the trailer, a dashboard load monitor, downhill cruise control, and a stretch brake for enhanced stability and control, to name a few.

"The Volvo FM 420 4X2 road train is another pioneering introduction by Volvo Trucks for the Indian market. Designed to enhance the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of road transport, it aligns perfectly with ongoing transformation in Indian logistics and the government's Gati Shakti master plan," - Vinod Aggarwal, MD and CEO, VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd.
