Numerous innovations like pepper sprays, safety bracelets, whistles, and SOS buttons in cabs exist to ramp up women's safety in India.
Recently, two students from the state of Uttar Pradesh have innovated a sandal equipped with advanced security features. It is made to make women feel safer and have protection during times of emergencies.
The students behind this security-backed sandal are Amrit Tiwari and Komal Jaiswal from the RPIC School in Siswa Bazar, Maharajganj district.
Amrit and Komal have also developed and connected a unique application with the sandal.

LOCATION, AUDIO, AND EVEN ELECTRICITY
To make it easy for a woman in an emergency to contact her family and friends, the safety sandal has a concealed button located under the toe area.
When pressed, it immediately sends an SOS alert to pre-programmed recipients. Along with it, it also shares the wearer’s real-time location as well as an audio recording of her current and surrounding area.
Amrit Tiwari and Komal Jaiswal have made an application that directly connects the sandal’s technology to a smartphone.
Speaking to Local18, Amrit explained. “We have developed an application that connects the technology embedded in the sandal to a smartphone. This ensures the wearer can instantly notify others in times of distress.”
Not just location, audio, and alerts, the sandal is also equipped with a self-defense feature that a woman can use to harm an attacker. In the pair, one sandal has the power to generate electricity. This can harm the attacker and put the wearer in a position of power.
It must be noted that this electricity feature operates without endangering the wearer.

PRICE, ACKNOWLEDGMENT, AND THE FUTURE
To make the safety sandal accessible to a wider audience, Amrit and Komal are offering it at an affordable price of Rs 2,500 per pair.
According to Komal Jaiswal, the sandal has been innovated in a way that is easy and practical for women of all ages to use during emergencies.
For their innovation, the young founders have received recognition from the Science and Technology Department of the Government of India.
Shortly, Amrit and Komal will be adding a camera to the safety sandal design. This would capture as well as send visuals to the wearer’s family and friends.
