Rupal Madhup, a brand marketing professional from Bengaluru has recently shared the ‘most Traumatizing Bumble Story’ about a friend involving digital stalking. This incident has raised a serious question about data privacy in today’s world.

Most 'Traumatizing Bumble Story' this weekend

Rupal shared that her friend was dating a Swiggy professional through the dating app Bumble. After the duo broke up, the man allegedly started misusing his access to Swiggy’s systems to monitor his ex’s whereabouts through her food delivery orders.

Labeling this incident as a “Peak Bengaluru” one, Rupal shared how digitalization can be traumatizing if an employee having access to consumer data violates protocols and uses the data for personal motives.

This man flagged his ex’s account in Swiggy’s system to have real-time access to her delivery locations. And he started stalking her “digitally”, demanding answers on her private matters.

“Why are you not ordering at your own place at 2 AM? Where are you?”

“What are you doing in Chennai?”

“Ordering chocolates, are you on your period?”

And so on.

Saying it was a “seriously creepy” affair, Rupal ended her note saying: “Data might be the new electricity, but it’s also one of the most dangerous weapons in the wrong hands.”

Netizens react

A LinkedIn user commented: "I hear an OTT series."

Another individual remarked: "She should write to the swiggy founder and demand how can some employee have full access to her data....It breach of privacy. Plus shes free to sue the person misusing the data and also sue swiggy for breach of privacy and putting her at risk.....its against her fundamental right to stay safe in the country.......Swiggy will be forced to fix this bug and put in a process that without any relation to the person and without a person consent data cant be shared with anyone......"

A third user wrote: "I work in Data and for people saying this might be fictional and getting this level of data access isn’t possible are all incorrect. When you are part of data teams, you mostly have access to user data. Its unusual, but you can see activity by customer id itself. Extremely scary"
