After L&T chairman SN Subrahmanyan’s speech went viral on Reddit advocating a 90-hour work week for employees, Shaadi.com’s Anupam Mittal responded jovially.
The statement of L&T that went viral
While interacting with his employees, an employee asked him why the company mandated working on Saturdays. Subrahmanyan immediately expressed his frustration that Sundays were off. "I regret I am not able to make you work on Sundays. If I can make you work on Sundays, I will be more happy, because I work on Sundays,” the L&T chairman said.
He went on to ask his employees, "What do you do sitting at home? How long can you stare at your wife?"
After watching the video, netizens have remarked the L&T boss has gone one step ahead of Infosys co-founder Narayana Murthy, who suggested 70-hour work last year.
Bollywood actor and mental health advocate Deepika Padukone has disapprovingly remarked on the video saying, "Shocking to see people in such senior positions make such statements.”
Former badminton player Jwala Gutta referred to Subrahmanyan's comments as "misogynistic" and the entire episode as "disappointing and scary.” Shaming the L&T chairman for not taking mental health seriously, she wrote on X, "I mean…first of all, why shouldn’t he stare at his wife…and why only on a Sunday.”
However, angel investor and Shark Tank India judge, Anupam Mittal reacted humorously to the L&T boss. He remarked, “But sir, if husband and wife don’t look at each other, how will we remain the most populous country in the world” followed by a curious emoji.
