A recent Reddit post of a US returned Indian techie is doing the rounds on social media.

After spending a decade in the United States, earning a master’s degree and working for Fortune 500 companies under an H-1B visa, the tech professional shared that he had to return to India in January 2024 following a company-wide layoff that also revoked his green card application.

The viral Reddit story

“I was laid off from my Tech job in 2024 as part of a company wide restructuring,” the professional wrote. “Unfortunately, this happened at the end of the 6 year period of my H-1B visa. My company also revoked my green card application as part of the layoff. About 300 other employees were laid off along with me.”

As a result, he had to return to India in January 2024. Initially, he was “excited” to return home after living outside the country for a decade.

However, his excitement was soon replaced with regret as he attempted to reintegrate into the Indian lifestyle.

From bad roads to polluted air, collapsing infrastructure to poor civic standards, the techie enumerated eleven points that affected his mental wellbeing.

“Seriously, I’m done,” he remarked. “I’m dying and devastated by this place,” the techie concluded.

Netizens react

Social media users gave mixed reactions to this post. Some showered him with empathy, while others suggested he should “move somewhere better” if he does not find his country up to his standards.

One user, who moved back in 2023 after over 15 years in the US, supported him. "The things you listed are a daily pain in the behind, and I hope they change. Until then, keep fighting."

An individual advised him to consider relocating to countries like Dubai, Singapore or Australia, citing his experience as a valuable asset. "It's unlikely these issues in India will get fixed soon. If you can, move somewhere better."

While another user commented, “Brother welcome to country of Vishwaguru, 5th highest GDP. Pehle America bolta tha kya hai India .. ab India bolta hai kaun hai America /s”
