PM Narendra Modi’s Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana was approved on February 29 with an investment of Rs 75,021 crore. The programme aims to increase solar rooftop capacity all around the country as well as to empower residential households to generate their own electricity. To promote rooftop solar installations and empower communities, the ambitious project is making a strong impact across India, bringing about a solar revolution that aims to provide clean and affordable energy to residents. According to a report by India Today, this initiative has been gaining momentum in states like Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh.
How the scheme is faring across the country?
In Uttar Pradesh, the government has set an ambitious target of installing 25 lakh solar panels over the next three years. So far, over 43,000 installations have been completed, showcasing significant progress towards achieving the set goal.
Incidentally, the Shimla district administration has received around 13,000 applications for the “PM Surya Ghar - Free Electricity Scheme”, of which 300 have been approved by the department. Shimla deputy commissioner (DC) Anupam Kashyap stated on Tuesday.
“Under the scheme, about 13,000 people have applied in Shimla district so far and 300 applications have been given departmental approval." -- Shimla DC Anupam Kashyap
The subsidy provided under the scheme has incentivized residents to opt for solar rooftops, with a subsidy of up to 60% for systems up to 2kW capacity. The district officials have been actively engaging with the residents to spread awareness about the benefits of solar power and encourage more people to participate in the initiative.
In Chhattisgarh, the PM Surya Ghar Yojana is transforming villages into solar-powered communities. The district Collector has been actively promoting the scheme and urging officials to identify villages that could benefit from solar installations. With a subsidy of 40% of the additional system cost for systems between 2 to 3kW capacity, residents are seeing a reduction in their electricity bills and are also contributing to a cleaner environment. The scheme aims to develop model solar villages in each district, showcasing the long-term benefits of solar power.
In Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, residents are embracing solar energy as a sustainable source of power. With the subsidy capped at 3kW capacity, more and more people are investing in solar rooftops to generate their electricity and even sell surplus energy back to the grid. The scheme has created a new source of income for residents and has the potential to transform communities by promoting clean energy usage.
Overall, the PM Surya Ghar Yojana is faring well across India, with states actively participating in promoting solar power and empowering communities. The scheme's focus on providing subsidies and incentives has encouraged residents to adopt solar energy, leading to a cleaner and more sustainable future for all.

Pralhad Joshi, Minister of New and Renewable Energy recently shared that the government has installed around 4 lakh rooftop solar connections until now, under the flagship programme.
This sums to a new residential rooftop solar capacity of 1.8 gigawatts (GW) installed in six months. JMK Research and Analytics published a report that this already amounts to more than half of the country’s total residential solar rooftop capacity.
As this solar revolution continues to gain momentum, more and more people are reaping the benefits of clean and affordable energy.
