Open AI is all set to inaugurate its very first Indian office in the capital city later this year, as the company shared with Reuters on 22nd August.
The developer of ChatGPT aims to strengthen its footprint in one of its fastest-growing markets.
OpenAI has been established as a legal entity in India and has begun hiring a local team, the company said in a statement shared with Reuters.
OpenAI has not yet confirmed the location of its New Delhi office.
The purpose of hiring a local team is to focus on reinforcing relationships with local partners, governments, businesses, developers, and academic institutions.
“The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission” stated Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, in a press conference.
He further added "Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India."
Open AI’s current status in India
Indian Express recently reported that India is OpenAI's second-largest market and one of the fastest-growing, right after the United States of America.
In the last fiscal year, ChatGPT userbase in India has expanded exponentially by more than four times and has the largest proportion of student population on ChatGPT worldwide.
India is a crucial market for ChatGPT, where it has recently launched its cheapest yet monthly plan at $4.60 (401.61 INR) just this week, targeting the nearly one billion internet users in the world's most populous country.
OpenAI is experiencing a strong competition in India from rivals like Google's Gemini and AI startup Perplexity, both of which have launched offerings that make their advanced plans free for many users in the market.
The company is currently facing legal challenges in India, with news outlets and book publishers, accusing the firm of using their content without permission to help train ChatGPT. The company has refuted the allegation and denied any wrongdoing.
The company is geared up to share more information about its first office and upcoming initiatives in the coming months.

Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister for Electronics and Information Technology, Railways & Information Broadcasting said in a statement "OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation."
The Union Minister further added , “As part of the IndiaAI Mission, we are building the ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI, and we welcome OpenAI’s partnership in advancing this vision to ensure the benefits of AI reach every citizen.”
OpenAI’s key engagement plans in India
OpenAI is well-prepared to host its inaugural Education Summit in India later this month, marking a significant step in its local engagement efforts.
Besides this, the company has declared its plans to hold its first Developer Day in the country later this year, aimed at supporting India’s growing community of developers, startups, and enterprises.
